"5 Generations" – A Painting with Meaning

Acrylic on Canvas, 40" x 32"

Symbolic painting allows artists to convey experiences, emotions, and ideas through imagery. In this piece, I weave together characters and objects to create a narrative scene—one that reflects my time living and working in Vietnam from 1993 to 1996.

"5 Generations" portrays a multi-generational Vietnamese family, featuring a baby, an older sister (holding a cellphone), a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. Women have long been the heart of family life in Vietnam, and in the 1990s, homes with multiple generations living under one roof were still common.

In the background, motorcycles symbolize Vietnam’s economic transformation, contrasting with a  bicycle, positioned further away, to highlight the shift from past to present. Another subtle detail is the signage: one reads "nước mắm" (fish sauce), a staple of tradition, while another displays "Pepsi", representing the wave of foreign investment following the 1993 trade normalization.

And the woman in pink? Just a classic nosy neighbor, watching it all unfold.
