"Red Vespa" acrylic painting on wood

Soraya Runckel / Comment on this

Acrylic paint isn't just for canvas or paper — it also works beautifully on wood. Painting on wood allows me to build bold colors, rich textures, and add even more personality to my work.

To prepare the wood surface for acrylic painting, it’s important to prime it first with gesso, preferably applying two coats. After the gesso dries, I use super fine waterproof sandpaper to gently sand the surface. This step smooths the area nicely, creating an ideal surface for detailed painting.

For this piece, I chose a close-up theme, inspired by an interesting object I spotted during my travels in Europe: a red Vespa. The subject worked wonderfully, and I even let the painting flow over the edges of the wood panel, giving it a subtle three-dimensional feel.

It turned out to be such a charming piece!
